A new study has revealed the most popular autumn-themed baby names in the United States, with the traditionally masculine name “Jack” topping the list as a surprisingly unisex option. The research, conducted by Hennessey Digital, analysed data from the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) to identify the names most frequently chosen by parents for babies born during the autumn season.
“Jack” ranked first with 8,696 babies receiving the name in 2023, including 13 girls, marking a shift towards the name’s newfound unisex appeal. The name is commonly associated with jack-o’-lanterns, a well-known symbol of Halloween, which may explain its autumnal popularity.
In second place is “Asher,” with 7,933 babies named in 2023. “Asher” is rooted in Hebrew, meaning “blessed,” a connection to Thanksgiving and the gratitude associated with the holiday. This name’s seasonal significance and positive connotations have made it an increasingly popular choice for parents during the autumn months.
Third on the list is “Scarlett,” chosen for 6,294 newborns in the U.S. last year. The name reflects the rich and vibrant colours of autumn, with scarlet hues representing the season’s dramatic change in nature’s palette.
“At fourth is ‘Hazel,’ with 6,178 babies named in 2023. This name is connected to hazelnuts, traditionally harvested in autumn, making it an ideal choice for parents who want to reflect the natural rhythms of the season,” said a spokesperson from Hennessey Digital.
Taking fifth place is “Rowan,” given to 5,480 babies in 2023. The name comes from the rowan tree, which produces bright red berries that stand out against the backdrop of autumn. Its connection to nature and the season’s wildlife makes it a fitting choice for autumn-born children.
Further down the list, “Ivy” ranks sixth with 5,059 babies given the name. In contrast to other trees and plants that change colour in autumn, ivy remains green, a unique symbol of endurance during the season. Seventh place goes to “Willow,” with 4,773 babies receiving the name. Willow trees undergo striking colour changes during autumn, making them an iconic seasonal marker.
“Paisley,” meaning “church” in its Scottish origins, is eighth, with 3,732 babies named in 2023. The name evokes the spiritual essence of Thanksgiving, aligning with the holiday’s themes of gratitude and reflection.
In ninth place is “Adam,” given to 3,474 newborns. Derived from the Hebrew word “Adamah,” meaning Earth, the name highlights autumn’s close ties to nature and the changing seasons. Rounding out the top ten is “Hunter,” with 3,454 babies named. The name resonates with the start of hunting season in autumn, a tradition in many parts of the U.S.
Commenting on the findings, Jason Hennessey, CEO of Hennessey Digital, said, “It’s fascinating to see the seasonal significance of these names and the meanings that tie them to autumn. The inclusion of Jack as a unisex name is particularly surprising, and we expect to see more traditional names crossing gender lines in the future.”
