Levi’s has emerged as the most frequently misspelt brand name in the UK, with over 151,000 online searches each month where the iconic denim brand’s name is spelt incorrectly. This is according to a recent study that ranks the top 20 most misspelt brand names in the country.
Despite its global recognition as a leading fashion label, many consumers struggle with spelling “Levi’s” correctly. Common variations include “Levis,” “Levvis,” and “Levi,” highlighting the challenges even well-known brands face in maintaining consistent brand identity in a digital landscape.
Close behind in second place is Amazon, the world’s fourth most valuable brand, with around 89,000 misspelt searches per month. Users searching for the online retail giant often make mistakes like “Amzon,” “Amazom,” and “Amazn,” reflecting how even a slight slip of the keyboard can lead to a brand name being misspelt.
In third place is Tesco, the British grocery giant, which sees an average of 85,210 spelling errors each month. Common misspellings include “Tescos,” “Tescoo,” and “Tesoco.” Despite being a household name, the frequency of these errors suggests that even simple brand names are not immune to mistakes.
The study, conducted by eCommerce Marketing Agency Strike Digital, underscores the importance of selecting a brand name that is not only memorable but also easy to spell. In today’s digital age, where online searches are a primary way consumers connect with brands, a name that is difficult to spell could potentially impact brand visibility and accessibility.
Samantha Cross, a brand expert at Strike Digital, emphasised the significance of choosing the right brand name: “A brand name is more than just a label; it’s the first impression you make on your audience. Selecting the right name is crucial as it sets the tone for your brand identity, influences perception, and can determine whether your brand stands out or gets lost in a crowded market. The research highlights how essential it is to choose a name that is not only catchy but also easy to remember and spell.”
The report also highlights misspellings for other well-known brands across various sectors. Asda, another major grocery retailer, ranks fourth with 81,350 misspelt searches each month, including “Asd” and “Asdda.” Fashion brand Adidas rounds out the top five with 63,800 errors, with variations like “Addidas” and “Adidass.”
The study further indicates that companies from diverse industries, including fashion, consumer electronics, and food and beverage, are all affected by misspellings. Google, Sainsbury’s, and Apple are among other prominent brands that feature in the top 20 list.
Overall, the findings highlight the ongoing challenge brands face in ensuring their names are not only recognised but also correctly spelled by consumers. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, the importance of a simple, memorable, and easily spelt brand name cannot be overstated.
