American Express, in collaboration with retail analysts GlobalData, has released a new report identifying the British high streets that excel in offering shoppers the most appealing blend of retail and leisure experiences.
The research, based on a survey of 2,000 consumers across the UK, highlights the key factors that contribute to a successful high street. According to the study, the most valued elements include a diverse range of retailers, ample parking, and a variety of independent pubs and restaurants. Additionally, entertainment options such as cinemas and theatres are increasingly important to shoppers, although proximity to train stations and green spaces were considered less critical.
The findings reveal that the top high streets in Britain are those that provide a compelling combination of shopping, dining, and leisure opportunities. Queen Street in Cardiff emerged as the highest-ranked location, praised for its variety of retailers and excellent transport links. This vibrant shopping street benefits from its proximity to historical landmarks and indoor shopping centres, making it a central hub for both retail and cultural experiences.
In second place is Gloucester’s central shopping streets, including Northgate, Southgate, Eastgate, and Westgate. These streets are celebrated for their thriving independent restaurant scene and strong leisure offerings. Chester’s Eastgate Street, which secured third place, is noted for its range of independent retailers and overall aesthetic appeal.
The top ten high streets identified in the report are:
- Queen Street, Cardiff
- Gloucester’s central shopping streets
- Eastgate Street, Chester
- High Street, Winchester
- High Street, Exeter
- Princes Street, Edinburgh
- High Street, Worcester
- Church Street, Liverpool
- Buchanan Street, Glasgow
- Market Street, Manchester
Dan Edelman, General Manager of UK Merchant Services at American Express, commented: “The high streets topping our list offer exceptional retail experiences coupled with opportunities to socialise and unwind. It’s clear that consumers value their local high streets and anticipate they will continue to play a crucial role in their daily lives. While there is no single formula for success, it’s promising to see that there are numerous ways to enhance high street appeal and drive future success.”
Matt Piner, Head of Retail Consulting at GlobalData, added: “As consumer expectations and shopping behaviours evolve rapidly, high streets must adapt to stay relevant. The locations that successfully align with shoppers’ preferences benefit from increased footfall and spending. Our analysis suggests that significant additional consumer spending could be realised by high streets that effectively address the factors most important to shoppers.”
The study underscores the ongoing importance of high streets in British communities and the opportunities for improvement and innovation to meet the evolving needs of shoppers.
