Surveying volunteer diversity in N Ireland

The Department for Social Development in Northern Ireland is running a Survey of Volunteers to explore the levels of volunteering, the support given and the backgrounds (diversity) of people who volunteer.

The survey should take approximately 5 minutes to complete, is totally anonymous and available on Survey Monkey. Responses will be used to improve the accessibility of volunteering activities.

Basics in preventing disability discrimination at work

Workplace relations experts Acas has produced a new guide to help prevent disability discrimination at work.

The guide, ‘Disability discrimination: key points for the workplace’, aims to help employers understand the basics around equality and disability discrimination and how to manage related issues.
 
Acas’ Head of Equality points out that

“Disability is a complex area of employment law that can encompass many conditions or situations that employers may not be aware of.

A place for community building

The Ubele Initiative and Locality are highlighting the need for Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities to be supported to take over community buildings to ensure they can meet the needs of their neighbourhoods for generations to come.

New report ‘A Place to Call Home: Community Asset Ownership in the African Diaspora Community’ finds that local authorities have been failing to renew leases on important community assets, meaning BAME groups are being forced from the centres which have been the cornerstones of their communities for decades. » Continue reading news item ... “A place for community building”

Managing equality in the workplace

Employment relations experts ACAS has produced three new equality guides, “practical advice to help you follow the law on equality and discrimination”.

  • ‘Equality and Discrimination: Understand the basics’ outlines the fundamentals of what employers, employees and their representatives need to know to comply with equality law.
  • ‘Prevent Discrimination: Support equality’ explains where discrimination is most likely to arise in the workplace and how to stop it happening.

Official NI charity guidance on equalities

Northern Ireland’s charity regulator has published new guidance to support charities in understanding the complexities of equality legislation as it affects them.

As stated in Charity Commission for Northern Ireland’s news item:

Equality legislation requires service providers, including charities, not to discriminate on certain grounds when they provide services to the public. There are, however, some exceptions for charities which allow them to be established or operate for the benefit of certain groups of people, and not others.

Draft equality guidance for NI charities

The Charity Commission for Northern Ireland has opened a public consultation on its new guidance on equality obligations for NI charities. The guidance aims to promote awareness and understanding in charities of the complexities of equalities legislation as it affects them.
