Social value policies grow at local level

A new report from Social Enterprise UK looks at how local councils in England are using the Public Services (Social Value) Act. One in three now routinely consider social value in their procurement and commissioning, and 1 in 4 (24%) have a social value policy.

Sector engagement with social investment

New from Big Society Capital, ‘Understanding the capacity and need to take on investment within the social sector‘ is a report by NCVO, commissioned by the Social Investment Research Council, to investigate the experience of social sector organisations engaging with social investment.

Community ownership for (sports) clubs and pubs

Scotland’s Third Force News reports, under ‘Communities get help to take over sports clubs‘, that new organisation Club Development Scotland is to help community groups that are looking to get involved in the running of any kind of sports team, giving legal, financial and governance support.

Social financing for environmental charities

New research by New Philanthropy Capital analyses the current financing for Northern Ireland’s environmental NGOs and alternative forms of finance for the future.

NPC was commissioned to support Building Change Trust and Northern Ireland Environment Link in exploring and understanding the potential for social investment – the use of repayable finance to achieve a social as well as a financial return for the sector.

Government goes for more social investment and impact bonds

The government has published strategy documents showing plans to expand the use of social investment over the next five years. This includes partnering with a UK university to establish a centre of excellence.

Small charities and social investment

The Institute for Voluntary Action Research has started new research on small and medium sized charities’ experience with social investment. Its first briefing ‘Small Charities and Social Investment: Points from the Literature’ (pdf, 706KB) is based on an initial review of existing literature and insights.
