London is Volunteering Capital 2016

London has been named by the European Volunteer Centre as ‘European Volunteering Capital 2016’, with Sligo (Ireland) to follow in 2017. The 2016 award recognises London’s creative approach to funding and resourcing volunteer organisations and infrastructure organisations.

Lisbon (Portugal) has been the Volunteering Capital for 2015.

Its not clear from any of the announcements whether being the Capital for a year leads to any particular related activities – Lisbon apparently organised some. Maybe we’ll learn more soon.

Croydon Voluntary Action has a copy of the Mayor of London’s letter, and the press release is here.
