Comments on toughening charity regulation

The recent Charity Governance Conference run by company secretaries’ body ICSA heard how the Charity Commission is toughening its stance in its role as Regulator.

ICSA has released a short press release on the subject, with a focus on updated version of the Commission’s Essential Trustee guidance due out this summer. Note: there has been commentary on this issue elsewhere, too, but this seems a useful summary.

The Charity Commission regulatory powers are due to be extended further with the announcement that the upcoming Queens Speech will see “powers …. to root out charities that misappropriate funds towards extremism and terrorism …. strengthened” (quote from The Guardian). This was included in the draft Protection of Charities Bill.
