Green grant boost for Peak District pollination conference and campaign

Matlock-based environmental project Little Green Space has been awarded a £500 Greenwatch Action Grant by Derbyshire County Council to fund a new education pack about pollination and the importance of bees.

The pack will be distributed to schoolchildren and students at a major Pollination Conference to be held at Chesterfield’s Winding Wheel Theatre on Thursday 30 April, which will launch a three-year Pollinating the Peak campaign run by Bumblebee Conservation Trust.

Richard Bunting from Little Green Space said: “We’re hugely grateful to Derbyshire County Council. With local schools and colleges attending the Pollination Conference, this education pack will offer fun and informative resources about pollination and bees that fit in with the school curriculum.

“With many food crops dependent on visits by bees and concerns for the future of bumblebees, such action by councils can make a difference. The pollination conference is also receiving fantastic support from Chesterfield Borough Council, which is hosting the event as part of its commitment to local biodiversity.”

Bumblebee Conservation Trust and Little Green Space are organising the all-day Pollination Conference with Chatsworth, Chesterfield Borough Council, Moors for the Future Partnership, water saving experts HSG UK, and Plain Green.

The free event aims to put the importance of bees and pollinators in the spotlight, and to inspire people to take action to help these insects. Everyone is welcome, with schools invited to send up to 10 pupils of all ages with up to three adults.

There will be interactive workshops, films and children’s activities, story-telling, beekeeping and cookery demonstrations, opportunities to see bees at work, refreshments and lunch. Speakers include former Chief Executive of Peak District National Park Authority Jim Dixon and a range of experts.

Only a few places are left for the conference. These should be booked in advance at or by calling Gill Perkins on 07825 639195. A free all-day exhibition at the event can be visited without booking.
