Charity tax registration goes online

Charities can now register with HM Revenue and Customs for tax purposes using an online process rather than paper.

Registration is necessary to claim Gift Aid and other tax reliefs. While the process is completely separate to that of the charity regulators, there is a commitment to moving to joint registration by 2016.

Currently you must have an HMRC online account (Government Gateway) and be registered as an organisation – verification will move to the new GOV.UK Verify system at a later date. The new service and information about registering a charity’s details can be found at https://www.gov.uk/charities-and-tax/get-recognition.

There are currently 15,500 new charity registrations per annum. HMRC press release at http://www.mynewsdesk.com/uk/hm-revenue-customs-hmrc/pressreleases/hmrc-launches-charities-digital-service-1117936.
