Social investment and community lending

A new report from the government’s Cabinet Office looks at how social investment could help community lenders to increase affordable finance for people on low incomes. ‘Scaling Community Lenders: The Role of Social Investment’ is available at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/scaling-community-lenders-the-role-of-social-investment.

As defined here, the community lending sector is diverse, and includes credit unions, personal lending Community Development Finance Institutions (CDFIs) and other lenders, including housing associations.

Newly added to the House of Commons Library (online), but published in July, is a Library ‘Standard Note’ on Credit Unions. It describes their operations, their regulatory structure and outlines the history of initiatives in the UK to encourage their development. http://www.parliament.uk/briefing-papers/SN01034/credit-unions
