Community radio funding rules relaxed

The government has announced that community radio stations across the UK are to see the relaxation of funding rules and extended broadcasting licences, to enable their valued radio service to continue and thrive.

The Community Media Association has welcomed the changes. Its chair said

“Community radio has proved itself a powerful medium that drives positive social change by impacting on participants, communities and audiences. … The changes to relax the rules around commercial revenue and allow for a further five-year licence renewal will be particularly welcome by sector.”

The necessary amendments to the Community Radio Order 2004 will be laid before Parliament shortly. More in the government news release (also on CMA website at
