Additional powers and funding for the Charity Commission

The government has announced new funding over 3 years for the Charity Commission (England and Wales) to tackle abuse, including extremist activity, in the charity sector. This is to help re-focus its regulatory activity on “proactive monitoring and enforcement in the highest risk areas like abuse of charities for terrorist and other criminal purposes, such as tax avoidance and fraud”. Reminder for all N Ireland charities to register

The Charity Commission for Northern Ireland has issued a reminder that it is now compulsory for all charities operating there to apply for registration.

Charities which have not yet heard from the Commission should prepare for registration by checking the lists on this CCNI page, and then take the appropriate next steps.

Republic of Ireland charity regulator starts

The Charities Regulatory Authority for the Republic of Ireland (CRA) has now been officially established, and has a new website at https://www.charitiesregulatoryauthority.ie/.

Existing charities with CHY numbers from the Revenue Commissioners have been transferred onto the new Register of Charities, although to start with the Register only contains charity names and addresses, and in some cases the charitable purposes.
