Support for preserving charity archives

A five year project is to support voluntary organisations in preserving their archives. Led by the Institute of Education in partnership with NCVO and Northumbria University, ‘Digitising the Mixed Economy of Welfare’ is funded by the British Academy.

This collaborative, interdisciplinary project will digitise and make available key documents that will enhance understanding of the role of voluntary organisations in our mixed economy of welfare.

Details from British Academy http://www.britac.ac.uk/arp/digitising-mixed-economy.cfm, and NCVO press release welcoming the project is at http://www.ncvo.org.uk/about-us/media-centre/press-releases/705-ncvo-reminds-charities-of-importance-of-historical-archives.

The best starting point for sector readers is ‘Eight reasons charities should be interested in their archives’ from project director Dr Georgina Brewis, which applies to the sector in general not just welfare charities, http://blogs.ncvo.org.uk/2014/08/20/eight-reasons-charities-should-be-interested-in-their-archives/.
