Improving charity strategy development

Accountancy body ICAEW has reported its findings from a review carried out on behalf of the Charity Commission, into “charities strategy development, implementation and review”. 26 charities were reviewed by experienced practitioners.

A couple of themes which emerged: few charities considered mergers in their strategies, and few linked strategy to risk assessment.

Recommendations include that the Commission should provide guidance on strategy processes and encourage charities to use scenario planning techniques. Also proposed is that the Commission should be more stringent in its registration process, with new legislation to allow it to refuse registration where the new charity is very similar to an existing one.
