The House of Commons Public Accounts Committee has published its reports on Gift Aid and other tax reliefs on charitable donation, and the Charity Commission. They are available (html and pdf versions) from Parliament page.
The headline quote from the committee chair is “It is clear that the Charity Commission is not fit for purpose”. The Guardian’s coverage http://www.theguardian.com/society/2014/feb/05/mps-condemn-charities-watchdog, Civil Society Media on sector reaction – “Umbrella bodies have agreed that the Charity Commission needs reform, but have hit out at (the report’s) unhelpful and irresponsible language” – http://www.civilsociety.co.uk/governance/news/content/16855/.
Charity Commission’s own rebuttal, comments from Charity Finance Group, NCVO and local sector support body NAVCA, which includes “if the Commission cannot reform itself then maybe a wider task force is called for”.
