Lobbying law returns to House of Lords

The second report by the Commission on Civil Society and Democratic Engagement, ‘Non-party campaigning ahead of elections’, was published on Tuesday (10th December). It makes proposals on changes to the government’s proposed lobbying law, similar to those put forward by NCVO, see their ‘ Lobbying bill – where now and what next?’ http://blogs.ncvo.org.uk/2013/12/10/lobbying-bill-where-now-and-what-next/ – this has a link to the report (pdf, 531KB).

The bill is due to be debated again in the House of Lords next week, 16th and 18th December, and NCVO has suggestions on action to take before then. A day of action also took place on Tuesday, see Storify report from Action Aid http://storify.com/actionaiduk/gagging-law-lobby-of-parliament.

The commission was set up by charities, academics, campaign groups and others in response to the potential ‘chilling effect’ on campaigning from the legislation.
