Extending Charity Commission powers

The government has opened a consultation on Charity Commission powers, following the critical report from the National Audit Office (see news item).

Proposals include:

  •   extending the range of criminal offences which automatically bar a person from acting as a trustee
  •   a new discretionary power to disqualify a person who is unfit from acting as a charity trustee
  •   a new power enabling the Commission to close down a charity.

Official news release, or consultation document – runs to 12th February.

The Charity Commission (England and Wales) has welcomed the consultation.
