The government has announced that it “is improving the way it consults by adopting a more proportionate and targeted approach”. A new set of ‘Consultation principles’ can be found at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/consultation-principles-guidance.
These include that departments can follow a range of timescales rather than defaulting to a 12-week period, particularly where extensive engagement has occurred before, and they should give more thought to how to engage with and use real discussion with affected parties and experts. However, the principles of the compact between government and the voluntary and community sector will continue to be respected.
