Charities may speak out on Scottish referendum

The Scottish charity regulator OSCR has published ‘Guidance for charity trustees on the referendum on independence for Scotland’ and unlike its earlier draft version this has been welcomed by sector body SCVO, whose chief executive said “Charities play a huge role in public life in Scotland so the referendum is bound to have a big impact on them. It is important that third sector organisations are able to get fully involved in the debate and this guidance from OSCR will help them to think about the issues involved, whilst adhering to the law.”

The Charity Commission for England and Wales has issued a final version of its guidance on decision making for charity trustees – a draft was circulated for comment earlier this year. ‘Its Your Decision’ explains the key principles of decision making that the courts and the Commission expect trustees to apply when they are making significant or strategic decisions about their charity.
