Charities need to prepare for end of old Gift Aid system

A number of sector bodies, including Charity Finance Group and NCVO, have jointly produced a short guide on the Charities Online service from HM Revenue and Customs which went live on 22nd April. In pdf, 225KB. (Charities Online enables claiming of Gift Aid without submitting paper records.)

New group for those in charity marketing

A Charity Marketing Group is to be launched by the Chartered Institute of Marketing. The group will be steered by a committee of CIM marketers from the commercial and third sector and will be chaired by Professor Ian Bruce, from Centre For Charity Effectiveness at Cass Business School.

Charity finance teams stretched

Charity Finance Group’s latest People and Pay Survey has found an increase in recruitment for new positions in the finance department, with redundancies having declined significantly. Salaries have remained flat, and half of finance directors work the equivalent of one extra day each week above contracted hours. The survey was completed by 338 member charities.

Proposals to limit charity shop rate relief

A review of business rates in Wales commissioned by the Welsh Government has recommended significant limits on rate relief for charity shops. Published this week, the review recommendations include consideration be given to:

  •   Limiting rate relief to 50% for larger charity shops trading in new goods.
  •   Limit the number of retail units eligible for charity relief in a given town centre OR limit to only one per charity in a given area.

Gift Aid on small donations review in 3 years

Speaking at an event to mark the launch of Charities Online, the Economic Secretary to the Treasury said that the government will review the progress of the Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme in three years’ time to ensure it is working properly.
