Campaigning for Adult Education in challenging times
Following the general election and the Spending Review, public spending on adult education is almost certain to decline over the next five years. This session seeks to build the capacity of those involved in campaigns to protect formal and informal adult education, recognising that adult education is not simply a public service but also an instrument of cultural change.
The policy briefing session aims to:
• improve participants’ ability to frame campaign objectives
• understand campaign strategy
• communicate with policy influencers
• understand success by looking at case studies
• sharing campaign ‘tradecraft’.
These skills, techniques and understandings are transferable to a range of contexts in which adult educators wish to encourage active citizenship through participatory learning.
Target Audience
This briefing is for anyone concerned with influencing public policy through open and participatory techniques. This may include:
• voluntary and community organisations
• trade unions
• self-advocacy groups
• public educators
• outreach workers
in fields with a strong lifelong learning dimension such as health promotion and community regeneration.
