Wider disclosure of charity expenses urged, but not compulsory

The independent expert group set up to look at the issue of expenses in the charity sector, following the uproar about the parliamentary system, has produced its final recommendations.

The basic conclusion is that charities should consider publishing expenses of individual trustees and senior managers but disclosure should not be mandatory. The cost of standardising scrutiny could distract from core work, and publishing expenses alone is unlikely to lead to greater accountability in financial management.
