Understanding the reality of the local third sector

Two "works in progress" reports from the Northern Rock Foundation's Third Sector Trends Study have been published.

'What makes a Third Sector Organisation tick?' is based on the study of fifty third sector organisations in North East England and Cumbria, and finds that there is higher management capacity than is sometimes thought, but they are less good at communicating their value and impact.

'Beyond flat-earth maps of the third sector' attempts to assess the scale and distribution of "below-the-radar" organisations - small, informal, local and community groups which outnumber the visible formal charities.

Summaries (approx 80KB pdfs) and full reports (2.22MB/310KB) can be downloaded via http://www.nr-foundation.org.uk/news/news_Feb10.html.
