Confusion and information on vetting and barring scheme

BBC1's Panorama looked at the impact of the new Vetting and Barring Scheme, run by the new Independent Safeguarding Authority, in its programme on Monday (8th February), http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00qs991. Volunteering England published survey results on the same day showing high levels of confusion amongst volunteer involving organisations on how the scheme is to operate.

VE said "We still believe the Vetting and Barring Scheme can in some ways improve volunteering organisations' work with children and vulnerable adults, but the ISA must not underestimate the scale of the challenge they face in ensuring volunteering organisations understand how the scheme will affect them." See VE news item.

The government also published a 'Vetting and barring myth buster'. It gives examples of when registration is not required, focusing on areas highlighted by the media in recent months, in particular personal and family arrangements.

Vetting and Barring Scheme Information Roadshows are being held in England, Wales and Northern Ireland in coming weeks, dates at http://www.vbsroadshow.org/DatesAndVenues.aspx. And see Independent Safeguarding Authority for all further information, http://www.isa-gov.org.uk.
